A total of nine American Red Cross volunteers hailing from the Big Island are now headed to assist those impacted by Tropical Storm/Hurricane Harvey.
The update comes after a Hawaii Red Cross announcement earlier this week when the organization said it was sending five Big Island-based volunteers to Texas and Louisiana to assist in relief efforts. Red Cross has about 200 volunteers who live on Hawaii Island.
Statewide, 21 Hawaii Red Cross volunteers are being deployed to assist in relief efforts.
Harvey hit Texas on Friday as a Category 4 hurricane. It has been downgraded to a tropical storm depression. The storm is reportedly responsible for dozens of deaths and caused tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes.
The Red Cross says about 33,800 people sought refuge in more than 240 Red Cross and partner shelters throughout Texas. It said six shelters are open in Louisiana with more than 450 people.
